Winning Nepal for Christ

The need for a generation of Christian leaders in Nepal has never been greater. Known as the home of Mount Everest, Nepal’s physical beauty is breathtaking, but the spiritual darkness is overwhelming. Winning Nepal for Christ is the vision of Stephen and Karen Negus. As partners with EQUIP, they are bringing the Million Leaders Mandate (MLM) leadership training to the Nepalese in both Hong Kong and Nepal.

This fall, Stephen and Karen will be returning to Nepal for the second conference in the Volume 1 curriculum. Already, they are set to speak to a full-capacity of 500 hungry Nepalese Christian leaders. Stephen and Karen’s journey to the leaders in Nepal has been a testament to the hand of God moving in mighty ways.

Stephen and Karen first felt called to missionary work in Hong Kong in 1988. It wasn’t until 2003 that they were able to pursue God’s call to full-time missionary work. After arriving in Hong Kong, they began teaching the Million Leaders Mandate curriculum to refugees from Africa, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. Their involvement with the Nepalese refugees in Hong Kong continued to grow, and they began to disciple Dinesh and Sadhana, a refugee couple from Nepal. As Stephen and Karen taught MLM to a group of Nepalese believers, they spent extra time mentoring Dinesh, eventually giving him the opportunity to teach some of the lessons. Since the beginning of the training, Dinesh has grown as a leader and caught the vision for leadership training. He is now beginning his own training within the Nepalese community in Hong Kong.

This past April, twenty-three Nepalese graduated from Volume 1 in Hong Kong. Through the training process, this group was profoundly impacted by MLM, and they insisted that it be brought to their mother country, Nepal. In an act of selfless sacrifice, the Nepalese in Hong Kong, most of whom have very low paying jobs, raised the funds not only for translation of the curriculum into Nepalese, but also for Stephen and Karen’s plane tickets to take the training to Nepal this past spring.

By word of mouth, the news of the March 2009 conference spread from the Nepalese community in Hong Kong to their friends and family in Nepal. On the day of the event, participants arrived from all over Nepal, some having traveled hundreds of miles at the encouragement of their friends and relatives in Hong Kong. The hunger for Biblical servant leadership training in Nepal was astonishing. One church leader walked three days with her baby just to get to a town from which she took a 12 hour bus ride to attend the conference. The leadership training was well received, and there is an even greater anticipation for the next conference. The feelings of many participants were shared by the President of one of the Bible schools in Nepal and publisher of more than 150 Christian books. He said, “The Million Leaders Mandate training is the best leadership training that I have ever seen.”

This story of what the Lord is doing in the lives of Nepalese leaders through MLM is an exciting example of how God is moving around the world, raising up Biblical servant leaders who will further the Great Commission! You can be a part of impacting Nepal for eternity by praying for Stephen and Karen, and the leaders they are training in Nepal, in the following ways: (1) Pray that Christian leaders, who have a passion to train other leaders and a desire to reach their nation for Jesus, would come to be trained. (2) Pray that the Nepalese believers with whom the Negus’ are working will would grow in their faith and be able to trust the Lord to do great things in them and through them.
