My love for radio goes back to my childhood. Even as a kid, I can remember my father listening to the recently departed Paul Harvey. My father loved radio too. Dad has had a weekly radio Bible teaching program for over 60 years!
When I graduated from high school, I went to the University of Georgia, enrolled in the College of Journalism and four years later had a degree in Radio. I worked my way through college and seminary working at radio stations.
In my senior year in high school, 1976, Ronald Reagan was running for president. He came close to getting the nomination, but it would be another four years before he was elected president. After his loss, Reagan promised he wouldn’t go away – and he didn’t. What Reagan did was begin a daily radio commentary that played all over America. I can remember Reagan’s commentaries when I listened to the radio every afternoon. It added value to my life. He was optimistic and encouraging.
In 1980, I started seminary and was working at a local FM station. Every day around noon, I found myself in my car listening to the competition to hear what they were doing and how I could get better. One program that stood out was a short daily feature by Norman Vincent Peale called “The American Character.” Peale would profile a heroic story of ordinary Americans accomplishing extraordinary things. It moved me. He too, like Reagan, was optimistic and encouraging.
I remember Reagan and Peale and how those small radio commentaries provoked me to think beyond myself. In a short moment, they had broadened my world and challenge me to be a better person.
In the years that followed, I had wanted to do something similar for a new generation of listeners, but never found the right vehicle, platform or content.
It was about three years ago, John Maxwell, Tom Atema and I were convinced that a daily radio feature on leadership, featuring John’s content, would give EQUIP a broader platform of recognition across the country and more importantly, add value to listeners related to their leadership and personal growth. Two years ago, LEADERSHIP MOMENT first aired! My job was to take John’s materials and transfer them to a radio feature, and then add a comment or two. My dream of adding value to others, via radio, while introducing EQUIP, had come true!

Today, LEADERSHIP MOMENT is heard on more that 1500 radio stations, every day, across the US and Canada. Over 40,000 downloads occur monthly as listeners put the daily feature on their iPods. Around the world, LEADERSHIP MOMENT has a growing iTunes listening audience in major cities like Singapore, Sydney, Hong Kong, Bangalore, and Johannesburg.
Just last year, our partners in the United Kingdom started a British version of LEADERSHIP MOMENT. Earlier this year, a Spanish version of our daily feature was launched in Latin America. Presently, we are talking to partners about expanding the feature into Cantonese Chinese. Every day our EQUIP email box is filled with contact information from people who first learned of EQUIP through LEADERSHIP MOMENT! The recognition of what EQUIP is doing all over the world is increasing with these radio audiences.
I am grateful to God that all over the world in our training and resources, and now through LEADERSHIP MOMENT, we are able to add value to others and encourage them to be Biblical servant-leaders!
