“It was a day that cannot be easily forgotten,” wrote Peter Mitimingi, EQUIP’s partner in Tanzania. October 18, 2008, was the official Million Leaders Mandate (MLM) graduation for 200 church leaders in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Graduates were adorned in caps, gowns, and all!

Dar es Salaam is the largest city in Tanzania and the economic center of this East African country. Church leaders from fifty different denominations graduated from Volume 1 of the MLM training in Dar es Salaam.

Peter said, “The training has helped the pastors and church leaders to be united in Christ and forget their differences of denominations. They have grown spiritually and mentally as well.”

Peter Mitimingi has led the Million Leaders Mandate three-year leadership development process in Tanzania, training leaders in six cities throughout Tanzania. Peter and his team have been using the Million Leaders Mandate material to equip church leaders for greater effectiveness.

Peter shared that after the training one pastor came up to him and was overwhelmed with all he had learned about leadership. He said, “I wish
I had not started my church before this training. I feel like I went ahead before the right time.” Peter encouraged him that it is not too late to apply the leadership principles he has learned in leading his church.

Many people from a variety of organizations and churches attended the Dar es Salaam graduation, including leaders from the government. A guest of honor even came from the Ministry of Home Affairs! Missionaries from several countries attended as well as members of the press from radio stations, newspapers and television.

All of the MLM graduates made a commitment to go back to their ministries and make use of the training they had received and develop the leaders in their organizations. Peter said, “We expect a great change in our country for the glory of God’s kingdom.”

Peter shared his heart: “God has called us to reach the ‘neglected.’ Most of these people are in the villages. We use this leadership training as a way to encourage churches in the urban areas to have a burden and passion to reach the neglected people in the villages. In this training, we brought all the pastors from the villages where we had already ministered so they could also be equipped for service. About ten of them graduated in this October ceremony.”

Five additional sites in Tanzania graduated from MLM Volume 1 in 2008. Peter plans to launch Million Leaders Mandate Volume 2 in 2009.
